The Twins Reunited: Caramon Majere Joins Idle Champions
“"My commitment is to my brother. They told me, in the Tower of High Sorcery, that his strength would help save the world. I am his strength, his physical strength. He needs me."”
The Heroes of the Lance arrived in Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms earlier this year when Raistlin Majere - legendary Mage of High Sorcery - joined the game, marking his first appearance in an officially licensed Dungeons & Dragons video game in more than 30 years!
Raistlin was soon followed by his fellow Companions, including the precocious kender Tasslehoff Burrfoot, the Golden General Laurana Kanan, and the gruff but loyal dwarf Flint Fireforge. Now it is finally time for his twin brother, the steadfast Caramon Majere, to join the party.
The team at Codename Entertainment is back to discuss bringing Caramon to life in Idle Champions, allowing the iconic Brothers Majere to stand together once more!
Read on to learn more about Caramon and how you can unlock free gear for him in the game!
What is Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms?
Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms is a free-to-play Dungeons & Dragons strategy management video game that lets you adventure with all of your favorite characters from across the incredible 50-year history of D&D.
You can combine Champions from throughout the D&D multiverse, bringing together iconic characters from D&D novels, video games, sourcebooks, and popular livestreams in ways that you could only ever see in your TTRPG home games. There are over 150 Champions in the game as of this article, with new ones being added every month!
The gameplay is deceptively simple, with rich complexity just below the surface. Champions synergize their abilities based on where you place them in your formation, working together to defeat waves of enemies in story-rich adventures based on official D&D sourcebooks from Vecna: Eve of Ruin, all the way back to Tomb of Annihilation, as well as original adventures only found in this game!
At the end of each adventure, you return to the campaign selection map with the gold you've collected translating into divine favor with one of the deities of the Forgotten Realms. This favor allows you to collect gold faster in your next adventure, letting you unlock more Champions and access additional upgrades. This, in turn, allows you to defeat more difficult foes as you continue to push further and faster in each adventure along your journey.
From Raistlin to Caramon
Raistlin's design set the tone for the Heroes of the Lance affiliation. As a pure DPS Champion, Raistlin is effectively the rock star of your formation. His allies rely on him to bring the much-needed damage required to defeat their many foes and progress through the adventure. In turn, Raistlin relies on Support Champions to be placed strategically in the formation to provide him with additional power to better do his job.
When designing each member of the Heroes of the Lance, we have to ask ourselves: how exactly does this Champion work with their allies, especially Raistlin? We had already tackled this puzzle in our designs for Tasslehoff, Laurana, and Flint, making each feel special and different - but we knew that Caramon, more than anyone else, deserves to feel like a rock-solid Support option for his brother, and we're confident in how his design has landed to deliver on that promise.
Who is Caramon Majere?
Caramon is a steadfast and stalwart warrior from the world of Krynn, who debuted alongside his fellow Heroes of the Lance in the now time-honored 1984 fantasy adventure novel Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.
Born strong of arm and broad of shoulder with a heart of gold, Caramon Majere is the Sword to his younger twin brother Raistlin's Sorcery. Loyal to a fault, Caramon gives his all to protect his beloved friends and family, even (and often) to his detriment.
Together with his fellow Heroes of the Lance, Caramon wields his brute strength tempered with good morals against Takhisis, the Dragon Queen.
The story of Caramon is one of a good man trapped by love and devotion for his brother, who often takes advantage of the warrior's kindness and generosity. He is burdened with responsibility for the care of his frail twin, but Caramon's indefatigable spirit allows him to endure it all without complaint.
The Shield Beside the Staff
Working with Margaret Weis to bring these legendary heroes to life in our game has truly been a pleasure, helping us ensure that each character remains faithful to the source material.
While our equipment, feats, and abilities draw inspiration from across a Champion's entire story arc, their visual design focuses on a recognizable "snapshot" from a particular point in their journey. For Caramon and Raistlin, we wanted to capture the versions most fans first encountered, making their appearances in the Dragonlance Chronicles trilogy our north star.
Spoilers! When first unlocked, Caramon will be sporting his look from Dragons of Autumn Twilight, complete with his unmistakable dragon-wing helm, but we're keenly aware that this is not his only iconic look. We will be releasing a Theme Pack for Caramon when he joins the game, which will allow him to take up his appearance from the Legends trilogy!
Supporting Raistlin with Positional Formation Abilities
Raistlin's Savant ability rewards the player for cleverly placing Support Champions with positional formation abilities. These abilities power up Champions based on where they are placed in the formation (adjacent, in the same column, etc). Ideally, Raistlin wants to be the only Champion who receives power from his allies' positional formation abilities. His damage skyrockets if this is done correctly, and that requires practice and precision to pull off.
For example, Flint Fireforge (shown here in the center of the formation) buffs everyone in his own column and the column directly behind him through his Forged Bonds ability, which in this arrangement would be empowering Tasslehoff (directly below Flint in the same column) and Raistlin (in the column directly behind Flint).
No single Champion promises more potential positional power for Raistlin than his brother. Caramon's design effectively allows him to bestow multiple copies of his positional formation ability depending on your formation shape, specific Champions being used, and Specialization choices you've made for him.
Caramon's Abilities
Caramon's Specializations are central to his design, beginning with his first set, which lets you choose what battle tactics you want him to employ. That choice dictates how his powerful positional formation ability Raise Spirits applies to his allies.
Raise Spirits: Encirclement increases the damage of all Champions adjacent to Caramon.
Raise Spirits: Overwatch increases the damage of all Champions in Caramon's own column, and the column directly in front of him.
Raise Spirits: Spearhead increases the damage of all Champions in the two columns behind Caramon.
Caramon's Equipment further buffs his abilities.
His second set of Specializations allows you to decide which group of allies will assist Caramon during this adventure. Each chosen ally in the formation will emanate a copy of Caramon's own positional formation ability, Raise Spirits, amplifying Caramon's buffing power.
Staunch Allies focuses on Champions with the Tanking role.
Sympathetic Allies focuses on Champions with a Good alignment.
Stalwart Allies focuses on Champions with a high Strength score.
Rounding out these highly customizable Specialization choices, Caramon also has the ability to Protect the Weak, which increases the health of those in the formation.
His Close Ranks ability significantly boosts the power of his positional formation ability Raise Spirits when he is under attack.
His Brother's Keeper ability increases the effect of his Raise Spirits ability based on how many Champions are NOT being affected by it, which is exactly what Raistlin prefers.
Finally, the Brothers Majere ability reinforces that the twins are inseparable. If one of them qualifies to be used in an adventure, the other automatically does as well, even if adventure restrictions would say otherwise!
The Heroes of the Lance March On
Caramon is the fifth Hero of the Lance to join Idle Champions. Reunited with his brother Raistlin, he also joins Tasslehoff, Laurana, and Flint as the Dragonlance roster continues to grow - but the reunion is far from over!
Next month, the twins will be joined by their older half-sister, the cunning but cruel Kitiara! Then, before the end of 2026, the Companions' steadfast yet often conflicted leader, Tanis, will take his place among the Champions to lead the charge against the dark forces of Takhisis!
